Music Discovery: March 2016

Check out what our music supervisors are listening to this month in our Music Discovery playlist for March.  Also featured are some up and coming Soul and R&B artists, hand picked by Chris Robles, one of our music supervisors.

A lot of good Soul and R&B albums have been released already this year and we’ve just started 2016! Here are a few songs from some of these albums that caught my ear and have been bumpin’ in my car, at home and through my headphones. These songs are definitely influenced by artists of the past and reflect the sounds of classic R&B, disco and even the 90’s…

Artist: BJ The Chicago Kid

Track: Turnin Me Up

This song has a nice laid back feel with vocals reminiscent of Marvin Gaye singing along with a smooth bassline, some horns, flutes and a little piano. I also like how the song rides out with mainly just the instruments during the last couple of minutes.

Artist: Anderson .Paak feat. ScHoolboy Q

Track: Am I Wrong

Freshly signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment label after appearing on the album “Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre”, his album is a mix of hip-hop, R&B and soul. This song, “Am I Wrong”, stood out to me with how it mixes hip-hop/soul with a funky club/disco beat.

Artist: Tweet feat. Missy Elliott

Track: Somebody Else Will

This song sounds like these two picked up where they left off back in the mid-2000’s with songs like “Oops (Oh My)” and “Turn Da Lights Off”. In “Somebody Else Will” Missy starts off the song with her unique flow followed by Tweet’s soothing and soulful vocals, it’s nice to hear these two working together again and to have them back in the music scene after being away so long!

Artist: NAO

Track: Fool To Love

NAO is a talented British artist who is currently working on her debut album and was recently featured on Disclosure’s album “Caracal” for the song “Superego”. Released just last week, “Fool To Love” has a cool 90’s R&B feel and her sound reminds me of artists like SWV, Total and Brandy.

About Chris Robles

Hi! I am Chris Robles, a music supervisor at PlayNetwork, and I have been in the music industry since 1999.

I can’t remember when I haven’t been listening to music. Growing up my parents always listened to music around the house. As I got older, I shared music with friends and we watched a ton of music videos (I mean, who didn’t?).

My love for various styles of music and my experience of understanding the music branding industry is probably what drove me into the music business. I started working in production, and later joined a promotion company where I designed promotional material. I also worked to book DJs and bands like George Clinton & Parliament, Spinderella, Questlove, Pete Rock, and DJ Lord (Public Enemy), to name a few.

I started at PlayNetwork in 2009 and continue to multitask, working with clients that span the retail landscape—fashion, home décor, hotels, bars and restaurants. I love discovering new music I know will work perfectly for one of my brand partners. And by far, the best part about working at PlayNetwork is being in a creative environment with a group of talented people.
