Tz’s Daily Dose: Underworld

Just heard about the collaboration between two great electronic artists, Brian Eno & Underworld. The song, titled ‘Beebop Hurry’ is to be the final song on the forthcoming “Underworld vs. The Misterons” compilation album ‘Athens’. The link sounds promising, and you can listen here! However, since there’s no video for that song I thought i’d include this live performance of ‘Born Slippy’ from 1999. Fans of the film “Trainspotting” will remember this track, and it’ll have you shouting “Lager, Lager, Lager“…

Heather’s Song of the Day: America

I’ve been listening to a lot of Simon & Garfunkel recently. I grew up with the duo’s music, as both of my parents were big fans and often played it around the house when I was younger. As I grew older I began to appreciate the group’s music even more. The harmonies and songwriting were among the best of the folk music renaissance in the 1960’s. Simon & Garfunkel went their separate ways in 1970, but have reunited twice in the past five years to tour. The video for today’s Song Of The Day, “America,” is from a few years ago when they appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to promote their first tour together in 20 years. They still sound pretty great. Enjoy!

Heather’s Song of the Day: Animal

People around the PlayNetwork office are well aware of my obsession with Swedish pop and rock music. I love Abba, The Knife, The Hives, Jose Gonzales, Roxette, Robyn and The Cardigans just to name a few. My newest Swedish fixation is a band called Miike Snow (pronounced “Mike Snow.”) The extra “I” is for extra infectious! It is nearly impossible to watch the video for today’s Song Of The Day, “Animal,” without getting it stuck in your head. Good thing it’s such a great song! Actually, the whole album is pretty great. I’m going to go ahead and say that it is near the top of my list of best albums of 2009. Enjoy!

Tz’s Daily Dose: Miike Snow

Miike Snow is a band, not a man, baby! They are made up of singer/songwriter Andrew Wyatt & the production team of Bloodshy & Avant, who you can either blame or praise for Britney’s ‘Toxic’. I first came across their music thanks to KCRW, who recorded an in-studio performance with Miike Snow and gave it away as a podcast! I had no idea who they were, but thought i’d give it a go and ended up loving it! I just adore the combination of acoustic and electronic instruments, and they utilize that to create fantastic music. Here’s ‘Silvia’ from said KCRW podcast!

Tz’s Daily Dose: Big Audio Dynamite

In September 1983, Mick Jones was fired from The Clash. You know what The Clash did next? They made another album, that nobody ever talks about, not even them. Mick Jones however, teamed up with renaissance man Don Letts and formed Big Audio Dynamite. The music sounds a bit dated these days, but at the time they were fusing hip-hop, punk, sampling & electronic music with actual songwriting (something that some bands forget about) and produced some stellar music. Here’s the original lineup playing ‘E=mc2’ live!

The energy is infectious! After several line-up changes, Mick returned with a more mainstream style of music and dubbed it B.A.D. II. Though slightly more commercial, they still managed to churn out some fantastic & innovative material. Here’s the video for ‘Rush’, and you can hear how great the 90’s could have been had Grunge not forced innovated music back to the margins…

Heather’s Song of the Day: Everything She Wants

This week’s videos have unintentionally been blasts from the past, so why stop the trend now? For today’s Song Of The Day I’ve chosen “Everything She Wants” by Wham! This video is such a treat on so many levels. George Michael in his Barry Gibb look-alike phase? Check. Andrew Ridgeley’s amazing leap, complete with mid-air somersault and perfect one-foot landing? You know it. Heartfelt lip-syncing straight to the camera? Oh yeah. Thousands of screaming female fans? Yup. Completely shot in black and white to better convey the seriousness of the subject matter? You better believe it. And there you have it – the perfect 80’s era music video. Enjoy!

Heather’s Song of the Day: Listen To Your Heart

During my junior high school years I listened to a LOT of Roxette. For me, the pure pop songs released by Swedish duo Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle were the perfect way to cleanse my aural palate between hours of listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Roxette had four number 1 hits in the US from 1988-1991; “Listen To Your Heart,” “The Look,” “It Must Have Been Love” and “Joyride.” Two other songs, “Dangerous” and “Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)” hit number 2 during that same time period. After 1991, however, the band started their slow decline in popularity here in the states. Despite losing ground in America, the group continued to release albums in the rest of the world into the early part of this decade. Now, the group’s entire catalog has been remastered and all of the albums have been re-released with additional bonus tracks. In honor of this occasion I thought it only fitting to make “Listen To Your Heart,” Roxette’s first number 1 hit in the USA, today’s Song Of The Day. Enjoy!

Heather’s Song of the Day: I Can’t Drive 55

I was never huge fan of the Sammy Hagar-fronted Van Halen; I was way more of a Diamond Dave sort of girl. I have to admit, though, that Sammy’s got some pipes. In fact, he has one of the best rock and roll voices of all time. Today’s Song Of The Day, “I Can’t Drive 55,” proves my point. As cheesy as the video seems now, (but really, there aren’t many videos from the eighties that don’t make us cringe when we watch them these days) you have to agree that Sammy gives a pretty great vocal performance. Today happens to be Sammy’s 62nd(!) birthday. No kidding! So enjoy a video flashback to a simpler time, but try to follow the speed limit.

Tz’s Daily Dose: Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan‘s new Christmas album is out today!!!! Yeah, you read that right, he’s gone and done a Christmas album, and you know what? It’s fantastic! That is, if you like the Dylan of the last decade and a half or so (which i do). It has a timeless quality. It sounds like it could have been done 50 years ago, yet sounds fresh and modern at the same time. Very much like his ‘Modern Times‘ and ‘Together Through Life‘ albums actually. You can sample some tracks on YouTube, which i will not link to, or you can just go ahead and buy it as all proceeds go to the charity Feeding America.

Heather’s Song of the Day: Life On Mars?

Few men have made more of an impact on modern pop music than David Bowie. Artists like Depeche Mode, Scissor Sisters, Lady Gaga, Nine Inch Nails, Placebo, Blur, David Byrne, No Doubt, Pet Shop Boys, Calvin Harris, Black Kids, Razorlight, Client, MGMT, Janelle Monae, KT Tunstall, Thom Yorke, TV On The Radio, La Roux and countless others cite David Bowie as an influence. He’s been pretty quiet for the past few years but I hope a new album is on the way. In the meantime, I will watch the video for today’s Song Of The Day. It’s “Life On Mars?” Enjoy!

Tz’s Daily Dose: The Phoenix Foundation

One of my favorite movies of all-time is an indie from New Zealand called Eagle vs. Shark. In fact, probably the only reason i’d even heard of it is because it stars Jermaine Clement from Flight Of The Conchords. However, it’s Loren Horsley that really makes this film special. Add to that a truly fantastic soundtrack and it becomes a sleepy classic. Most of the soundtrack is done by New Zealand band The Phoenix Foundation. This is good and bad. Good because they’re a great band that i’d not heard before, and bad because i cannot find any CD’s of theirs as they seem to be slightly obscure. However, i did find a video for ‘Going Fishing’ from the Eagle vs. Shark soundtrack. Enjoy!

Heather’s Song of the Day: The Spell

One of my greatest guilty pleasures is European pop music. I love Kylie Minogue (even though she’s Australian), The Saturdays, Erasure, Roxette and countless others. I just like fun, bubblegum, party music every now and then. One of my new favorite pop groups is Alphabeat, a Danish sextet who came onto the scene with their successful (in Europe, anyway) debut album, This Is Alphabeat, in 2007. The album had several hits, including “Fascination,” “10,000 Nights” and “Boyfriend.” Their second album, The Spell, is set to be released in the UK on November 2. Rumor has it that the group will be touring here in the US sometime soon. I hope so, as it looks like they would put on a fun show. In the meantime, today’s Song Of The Day is the first single released from the new album, the title track, “The Spell.” Enjoy!

Tz’s Daily Dose: Kraftwerk

One of the great things about my job is that loads of new CD’s cross my desk every day! While most are easy to ignore, when i saw the new Kraftwerk re-issues i immediately stopped what i was doing to have a listen, and they sound fantastic! So, why not include them in The Dose series? If you’ve never heard their music, and you think it sounds 80’s, keep in mind that this song is from 1974. The reason it sounds 80’s is because everyone you loved in the 80’s (unless you were into crap) was inspired by Kraftwerk. They’re still playing and recording, and this next video is from a recent performance, sans the robots. Here’s Kraftwerk with ‘Autobahn’… By the way, at 8:52, this is the short version…

Heather’s Song of the Day: It’s Late

65 years ago today, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet radio show premiered on CBS radio. It was a situation comedy that followed the life of real-life couple Ozzie and Harriet Nelson and their two sons David and Eric, known as “Ricky.” In the early years, actors portrayed David and Ricky, but by the time the show moved to television a few years later, David and Ricky were playing themselves.

I loved watching reruns of the show when I was a kid. My favorite character was Ricky, and in the later years of the series (which ran until 1966) Ricky used the show as a platform to launch a music career. Many of the episodes from the late 1950’s and early 1960’s ended with Ricky performing a song. That was my favorite part. Many of the songs he performed on the show charted on Billboard and are still in the playlists of oldies stations everywhere. Ricky continued his music career after the show ended and was performing and writing new songs until his tragic death in a plane crash in 1985.

Here is Ricky Nelson performing, “It’s Late” on 1959 episode of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.

Tz’s Daily Dose: IZ

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what art is, and what art can be. I’m sorry to tell you that i haven’t quite figured it out, but i do know magic. I also know who has the magic and who doesn’t. Years ago, i used to talk about music with an older friend of mine and he’d turn me on to some older stuff that i hadn’t heard and i’d turn him on to some newer stuff. One day he came back from his family’s Hawaiian vacation raving about this man they call Bruddah IZ. On went the CD and out went my mind. I’d heard very little Hawaiian music up to that point and what i had heard did not sound like this! Then I saw the picture on the sleeve and was shocked at what i saw! Not in a bad way, it was just amazing to hear the voice that came out of this body, but the more i listened, the more sense it made. IZ seemed to be the very embodiment of what Hawaii was. He was a mountain of a man and his voice could rumble like the earth,

Tz’s Daily Dose: Agent Orange

I was a skater in the 80’s…for about 8 months, until one fateful day i totally ate it on some half-pipe that we climbed the wall to get at. I went up. I came down. Hard. On my knee. We had to climb back over the wall with the owner’s mom chasing us with a rolling pin! It hurt for the next 8 months! I promptly tossed the skateboard (a McGill) that i’d saved up so long for in the garbage and started playing my drums. I was a good drummer. I was NOT a good skater. However, the clothes and the music stayed with me for years to come, and today i’ve been reminiscing, so i thought i’d share my dose with you. Here’s ‘Bloodstains’, which was my introduction to Agent Orange and is still as fine a skate-punk song as you’re likely to find, AND it’s less than 2 minutes long!

I’m in a Beastie Boys kind of mood today, so what better way to celebrate than by featuring one of their best videos, “Sabotage,” for the Song Of The Day?

This video brings back fond memories for me. I remember seeing it played countless times on MTV when it was released in 1994 and it is often on lists counting down the best videos of all time. The Griffin Home Boys

Just the other day, I watched a video by the recent 2009 World Science Festival called Notes and Neurons: In Search of the Common Chorus. It included musical performances and a panel discussion about music’s interaction with the brain and our emotions. The panel included several well-known neuroscientists and musical artist extraordinaire, Bobby McFerrin.

There were several fascinating scientific points throughout, but three statements were of particular interest to me:

“Everyone at some place inside them, have a sincere desire to participate, to become part of something. Which is a very strong need, I think, in all of us to be part of some kind of community…” — Bobby McFerrin

“One of music’s primordial functions is to breed or foster social cohesion and really get people’s brains aligned so that they can form a larger community than themselves.” — Dr. Jamshed Bharucha

“Music speaks a particular kind of emotional language.” — Professor Lawrence Parson

Music, community, and emotions; three words that resonated throughout the discussion and the very same words that resonated in my mind as I reflected on the experiences I witnessed at the Griffin Home,

Heather’s Song of the Day: What You Waiting For?

Today, one of the most influential female pop singers of the 90’s turns the big 4-0. That’s right! Gwen Stefani is 40 years old today. Gwen began her career as lead singer for No Doubt; a title that she still holds today. But in 2004 she branched out into solo work and released her first album as a solo artist, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. The extended version of the video for the lead-off single is a tongue-in-cheek peek at Gwen’s creative process after deciding to try out a solo career. In reality, Gwen worked with a multitude of songwriters and artists to produce a record that was more poppy than the regular No Doubt fare and the album was a smashing success. Since then she has released a second solo album, The Sweet Escape. It all began with today’s Song Of The Day, however. “What You Waiting For” was the song that broke the songwriting ice for Ms. Stefani. Happy Birthday, Gwen!

Heather’s Song of the Day: Soon We’ll Be Found

Sia’s Some People Have Real Problems, was one of my favorite albums of 2007. Earlier this week I started listening to the album again after not playing it for awhile. I didn’t know that this song had been released as a single, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found this video. It’s a little slow to get going, but it is great overall. I’ll content myself with this video and the album until Sia’s next disc is released in early 2010. Enjoy!

Heather’s Song of the Day: All I See

Last night Kylie Minogue, the Australian pop princess, started her very first North American tour. It’s hard to believe that she has never toured on this side of the pond, especially considering that she’s been recording and performing since the 80’s. Remember The Loco-Motion? It’s been 21 years since that video was released, but Kylie looks exactly the same! Well, maybe she’s changed her hair a bit.

Despite enormous fame in her native country and in Europe, South America, Asia, and well, basically every other country in the world, Kylie has never really been able to match that success here in the US. It looks like she is hoping to break through now, though. I am a big Kylie Minogue fan and I am excited that she is at last touring in the states. Unfortunately, she did not include a Seattle date on this tour, but I am hoping that the tour is well-received and she decides to come back soon and add more stops.

So today’s Song Of The Day is “All I See,” which comes from Kylie’s 2007 album X.

Concert Review: Sondre Lerche @ The Triple Door, Sep. 29th 2009

According to Sondre Lerche last night at his early show at The Triple Door, his hometown of Bergen, Norway just endured (or more likely celebrated as rainy cities love their rain) 100 days straight of rain. Reminding us Seattle is not the rainiest place on earth. And don’t we know it! In Seattle we had our first full day of rain in what felt like awhile after a lovely summer. It made for a perfect night to spend indoors at the elegant Triple Door: eating yummy satay, drinking wine, and watching Sondre Lerche.

After the sad and ruminative opener, New York-based songwriter JBM Sondre Lerche came out solo- just him toggling between his two guitars, electric and acoustic, and a backdrop of lighted “stars”. He was so engaging, captivating the audience with his crooning voice and playful guitar playing (that he makes look so easy!). His banter between songs was like a charming, dear friend- all self-effacing and adorable.

His whole catalogue was represented well for such a compact performance, from “Two-Way Monologue” to energized renditions of his new songs like “Heartbeat Radio” and “Words &

Heather’s Song of the Day: Sleep On Needles

Yesterday I fortunate enough to attend Sondre Lerche’s KEXP performance at Seattle’s The Triple Door. It was a fantastically simple setup; just Sondre and his two guitars.

I wasn’t super-familiar with his music before the show. I mean, I knew a few of his songs, but I wouldn’t say I was a super-fan or anything like that. After yesterday’s show though, I will definitely be looking up more of his tunes. In honor of his great performance yesterday, today’s Song Of The Day is Sondre Lerche’s “Sleep On Needles.” It is dedicated to you, Shannon! I know this is one of your favorite Sondre Lerche songs.
